Ten miles off the north coast of Kyushu there lies a small island called Iki.
On this island, quiet villages and farmsteads are interspaced with serene woodlands and mountain paths, but the beaches and their dazzling warm waters are never more than a few minutes away.
Overlooking the island just below its highest peak sits a small neighborhood called Katabaru. Here on a hot summer day, the singsong of warblers and the humming of cicadas can be heard, and beyond the hazy air can be seen below the winding streets leading into town and harbor, and from there the bright blue ocean beyond.
